"It started before the economic problem, with radio programmers and owners failing to format a station to the beat of the market. KIFM's Mike Vasquez is my hero because he allows the format to breathe and is still creative.
When the Smooth Jazz listener [in other markets] got side-swiped with lack of programming [cojones and vision], then real economic woes set in locally. Fans, too, froze up like deer in the headlights and getting them to buy tickets to events has become difficult. Agents, managers and promoters sometime have a happy ending with the consumer buying tickets very late in the game [walk-ups); other times, it doesn't happen at all and the promoter goes down and the acts are embarrassed. It didn't have to be that way be, but stations lost track of who's listening and what they need from the format, and that can be negligible in the stations responsibility to actively promote an event with their call letters on it. The Las Vegas Smooth Jazz shows these seems to be backing out of welcoming any show.
[When] radio is too busy being spread thin, everyone falls short of their goals and fear dominates. |
