KIFM, PPM Game-Changer

Dazzling debut casts other programming approaches in a new light, challenges misperception of Smooth Jazz as a "the middle of the pack" format

Lincoln Financial Media's KIFM/San Diego bowed auspiciously in its first currency PPM ratings book, June '09, earning fifth 12+ with 4.7 AQH share, and ranked sixth 25-54 with 5.3-share. The venerable radio station's debut is the highest to date among Smooth Jazz stations to make the transition from diary methodology to Portable People Meter since Arbitron rolled out its new audience measurement system in Jan. 2007.

KIFM's stunning premier is a tour de force – a game-changer, and an object lesson in the brave new world of PPM. It proves conclusively that Smooth Jazz is, indeed, a vibrant, viable, competitive format. In this, the first of two columns, we will take KIFM's pulse: palpate the range of programming strategies, critical (and forward-) thinking and other forces that propel KIFM's continued success. It's not rocket science or voodoo: just great radio.
